Nina Hoffman is “stepping down” as President of National Geographic Books

As you may have heard, Nina Hoffman has announced she is stepping down as President of National Geographic Books at the end of the year. We truly are going to miss Nina. She has been an incredible and dedicated leader during an era of almost constant change for publishing in general, and books in particular, and I wish her well in all of her future endeavors. I am extremely grateful to her for her counsel and for sharing her substantial experience within the book publishing industry these past few years. Fortunately, she will be with us through the end of the year for transition purposes.

I will immediately begin the process of recruiting a senior executive to lead our book publishing efforts. In the interim we will operate as follows:

Barbara Brownell, VP and Editor in Chief, will report to me on editorial matters, and Carl Mehler will report into her.

Hector Sierra, Chief Operating Officer, will report to me, and Linda Howey (VP, Retail and Special Sales) and Ruth Chamblee (VP, Trade Marketing) will report to Hector. Jeff Reynolds will report to Ruth.

Heidi Vincent (VP, Direct Marketing) will report directly to me.

Children’s Book Publishing will continue to report to Melina Bellows, EVP of Children’s Publishing and Chief Creative Officer for Kids and Family, who continues to report to me.

I have tremendous belief in our potential and have been highly impressed, during the business reviews I have conducted to date, with both the quality of your work and your commitment to the Society. I know I can count on you to remain focused on delivering THE best list possible for our global retail, direct and digital distribution channels for 2011 and beyond, as we pursue our goal of becoming the world’s No. 1 publisher for knowledge-based information and entertainment.
