Great white shark kills South African bodyboarder

David Lilienfeld was killed yesterday by a great white shark off the coast of South Africa.

According to a report released by the City of Cape Town,
the National Geographic Channel show Shark Men
should not be blamed for the death of David Lilienfeld.

Many people in South Africa think otherwise.

For your consideration — a story from just three weeks ago:

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp is the majority owner of the National Geographic Channel.

When does flirting become pandering? When does Mary Poppins’ Spoonful of Sugar become aggressive sugar marketing?

The Cape Town report is probably correct, that “Shark Men” had little to do with the incident. Its logic scans well and isn’t blame-shifting. Indeed, Cape Town could have been expected to blame “Sharkmen” rather than its hazardous waters to avoid a dip in tourism. They cancelled the permit, yes, but eliminating any possible shark enticement after the incident is a municipal expectation.

Even so, is it necessary for the Society to use macho, high-risk,”extreme” attractions to swell its TV market share? Is this science reporting or cage fighting? When will we get around to NGSXXX Channel? “Nude Bivalve Collecting,” “The Girls of Scripps Institute.” Well, there is the sweethearts behind bars theme; one supposes that could be pushed further.

Science is fascinating without much pizazz. Unless you are playing to the peanut gallery. John Fahey might treat this with a dignified disclaimer, and actually address Murdock threats to the waning – read “desperate” – reputation left to the Society.

    • Three thoughts:

      1. I agree that the Cape Town report is probably correct that Shark Men had little, if anything, to do with the attack. Although, if that’s true, they’re not helping their own cause by revoking the Shark Men’s license to operate in South African waters. Makes it appear as though there’s a connection between all the chumming & a dead bodyboarder.

      2. Of course the Channel is “playing to the peanut gallery.” That’s the Channel’s programming strategy & its business model.

      3. On Facebook, you posted a link to a photo of Jack Nicholson with a caption saying: “The people who give a shit are right over there.” I can imagine Rupert Murdoch saying the same thing to you & me.
