On “the Society’s flirtation with dictators and despots”

A National Geographic staffer (who requested anonymity) sent us this comment:

“… I continue to be appalled at the Society’s flirtation with dictators and despots. The excellent recent story about Afghan women is the rare affirmation of the liberal values we used to celebrate. Caring about the planet is a fine idea—as long as we remember that humans are an integral part of it. I am glad NGS takes on global warming and endangered species: These things affect us humans as well. But if they are somehow severed from concern for freedom, human rights, and human dignity, the planet may not be worth saving….”

We couldn’t agree more.
