Pull Up The Drawbridge! The “Amateurs” Are Coming!

How does an independent filmmaker produce a 40-minute fan-fic movie that looks almost like a studio project—all for a reported $3,000? We have absolutely no clue.

But take a peek at this trailer for The Hunt for Gollum—an unofficial prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy that was released in May—and then ask yourself: If a guy and 150 of his friends can create a lower-than-low-budget movie with such slick production values, and then distribute the film for free on the internet, what does that say about the future of a business like National Geographic?

One of Jeff Howe‘s catchphrases pops to mind: Passion is the currency of the 21st century. It’s clearly in ample supply here:
